While Catalina helped Tom subdue a couple colts, Veronica sprinted across the street and darted in front of the confused horse. She wasn’t sure that was the proper action, bracing herself to get run down, but the creature stopped before hitting her. Oddly, it looked almost like the horse was lifting off the ground. It hovered a moment, then its hooves landed on the pavement again. But surely that was impossible. Veronica wondered if someone spiked her cola. She placed a hand on the horse’s neck, doing her best to keep him calm and still. George saw her and called out.

“Keep Donnie there, Nica! I want to talk to him.”

The horse’s eyes rolled. Veronica blinked. It might have been just a coincidence, but it looked like the stallion reacted to George’s words. As the rest of the officers helped the Andersons guide the horses back toward their farm, George joined Veronica. He took hold of the white horse’s mane and pulled the creature further down Sagittarius before turning to face it.

“Damn it, Donnie, shift. Now.”

The horse shook its head from side to side, somewhat frantically. George sighed, crossing his arms, obviously willing to wait. The horse nickered. Tiny sparks appeared around the creature as it shrunk in size and morphed into a young man, maybe in his late teens. Veronica blinked away the dazzling lightshow, then turned away when she saw the man was naked as the day he was born. George grabbed the man’s arm when he tried to run.

“Donnie. Put some pants on so we can talk.”

“Uh, hi, Chief!” The man responded, going for cheerful and innocent as he hopped around, pulling on a pair of shorts he had grabbed from a bag around his neck. After he yanked a t-shirt over his head, his smile widened. “What’s new?”

“What’s new are the multiple reports from tourists of a white horse flying through the air, egging a group of other horses to break through the Andersons’ paddock. I get that you need to bleed off some of the energy by shifting, Donnie. But what have I told you about pulling that stuff in broad daylight?”

“Yeah, I know,” Donnie gave the chief a hangdog look. “I’m only supposed to shift or fly at night and only outside of town. But this time was different. I heard Mr. Anderson, um, Richard, talking to Tony. He said he had a buyer for Sweetpea.”

“You know the Andersons sell horses, Donnie.”

“But I know the son of the guy he’s selling Sweetpea to, Chief! Last week, when a bunch of us went to the mainland to watch that new movie at the drive-in? Well, I heard the son—Drew’s his name—I heard Drew bragging that his dad was gonna make a ton of money off the new mare he was buying ‘cause he planned on using her to stud every year until her health gave out. Then he was gonna shoot her. Sweetpea is only a year-old filly, George. She doesn’t deserve that fate.”

“So, you thought you’d incite a stampede down Main? Not the way to handle your concerns, Donnie,” George sighed.
